Breaking The Ice
Posted on April 6th, 2009 No commentsIce bridge in Antarctica linking a shelf of ice the size of Jamaica to two islands has snapped.
The collapse, scientists say, could mean the Wilkins Ice Shelf is on the brink of breaking away, and provides further evidence of rapid climate change in the region. David Vaughan says the breakage is a ‘really strong indication’ of waming. Professor David Vaughan is a glaciologist with the British Antarctic Survey who planted a GPS tracker on the ice bridge in January to monitor its movement. He said the breaking of the bridge had been expected for some weeks and much of the ice shelf behind was likely to follow.Leave a reply
