Britian Backs ‘Clean’ Coal Power Plants
Posted on April 23rd, 2009 No commentsThe British government has given the go ahead to build up to 4 new Coal Burning Power Stations, provided they prove they can reduce emissions.
The approval is based on so far unproven technology, that would only initially apply to 25% of power startions’ output. Ed Miliband announced that the UK would “lead the world” in cleaner coal energy, without abandoning climate change commitments. Green groups took well to the news, but said that any new stations would still increase the release of CO2.Last year coal power stations supplied the UK with 31% of its electricity, but one third of them are due to close over the next 10 years. Coal power is generally the cheapest for of generating electricity, however it is also the dirtiest. Mr Miliband claims that successful carbon capture system development could could cut emissions from coal by 90%. The results are yet to be seen
