Charity Donations Hit by Recession
Posted on April 8th, 2009 6 commentsConvincing someone to give some of their hard earned cash to charity is difficult at the best of times.
Its hardly surprising that the current downturn has lead to a fall in charity donations. Unfortunately the fact is, its times like theses when charities see an surge in demands for their services whether its disaster relief or helping the poor. Money left to charities in wills amounts to more than 1.9 Billion pounds a year, 30 times larger than the amount raised for this years comic relief.
Unfortunately the latest data shows that charity donations left in wills fell by 66 million pounds in the last 3 months of 2008, and a recent report predicts further of between 150m and 200 million pounds in 2009, due to falls in the prices of houses and shares
All is not lost however, as only 7% of people currently leave a charity donation in their will. An increase to just 11% could increase charity donations by an extra 1 billion pounds a year.
Charities must continue on in the hope of raising enough to carry on their vital work. Here’s what Arsenal FC did to help Teenage Cancer Trust
Transcript: Teenagers shouldnt have to stop being teenagers just because they have cancer. Aresenal players are helping young people with cancer live the life they want to live, by dontating a days wages to teenage cancer trust. You can help them too by donating online.

Maybe bankers should give their bonuses to charity this year. Makes more sense than giving trillions of pounds to failing bankers when a mere fraction of that could have ended world hunger.
