Charity Saves Lives: Indonesia Earthquake
Posted on October 9th, 2009 2 commentsMost of us living in the UK or America never really experience the work of charities. We are luck enough to have everything we need whenever we need it and we live in safe environments. But for those is poorer, more dangerous parts of the world, charity is a lifeline that has a huge positive impact on peoples lives.

Take for example one small Edinburgh based charity Mercy Corps. They were one of the many charities that immediately responded to last weeks Indonesia Earthquake which has left more than 1,000 people dead and trapped thousands of people in collapsed buildings.
I arrived to find that 90 per cent of the houses in one village had been destroyed, but remarkably only one person had been killed out of a population of between 450 to 500 families. It was an elderly man in his 70s. The people living in Indonesia know they’re living on a major fault line so they’re aware that an earthquake could hit at any time.
Workers from the charity Mercy Corps alone have been credited with saving hundreds of lives in last week’s Indonesia earthquake. The combined effort of scores of other charities has likely saved thousands of lives.
So although we in the west rarely see the impact of charity work, it is a vital lifeline to parts of the world that experience these kinds of disasters. By making a charity donation to charity you can make a huge positive impact on some-one’s life, perhaps unparalleled in our society.

Charity plays such an important role in the lives of so many people, we may think the recession is a bad time for us, but its nothing compared to the things some people have to deal with everyday
