For those of you unlucky enough to have lost your job to the recession, here is a helpful video on How to stand out when applying for jobs in the media

Starting A Job Search: How To Get A Media Job In The Recession

There are opportunities job out there, and in some areas a lot more opportunities because of whats happening. Whilst news for example is struggling, because less people are buying newspapers and there’s a huge availability of free media, free newspapers, Internet, and in some cases in print media large companies, the Sun, The Times, are actually competing with themselves, because they have their own online news site. Having said that, if your looking for job opportunities, look at things like the free media and the Internet, because what may be free for the consumer, you will still obviously get paid for working for them.

Top tips for getting into the media. First, be absolutely sure and knowledgeable about what area you want to get into. The most important thing you can do is research reasearch research. Once you’ve researched, try and get yourself in there in what ever way you can. My greatest tip particularly in the media industry would be do not give up. Keep going. Because people who make it in the media industry more often than not, you will hear from them that you will face rejection after rejection after rejection, but they kept going. Get involved with things at University. If you want to write and you want to become a writer in print media, start writing in newsletters now, get things published. If you want to get jobs in radio, do student radio. Even if your just working in the radio station rather than actually being the presenter. Get that experience behind you, and then do go out and network, do make contacts, and dont just go up and say I want a job. Build the relationships first. Get their advice, keep in contact. Offer them things of interest, later on they may be prepaird to do you a favour. The most important thing is dont waste these peoples time. Dont go barreling in demanding jobs, dont have nothing to offer. Build a portfolio first, make sure you have something to show them.
